Can I be traced if I use a proxy?

In most situations, tracking residential proxy use is a hard task to pull off. Sites that you visit can see only the IP address of the server you are connected to. So to track your original IP, the site needs to collect some kind of fingerprint of other data to track your visits without a proxy. But if you are always keeping your guard up, the actual tracking will require a lot more resources and time.
